Candle Quality Control in Vietnam: CE, REACH & Prop 65 Compliance Guide 2026

Why Quality Control Is Critical for Candle Imports

Candle quality issues affect both safety and retail performance. A candle that tunnels, produces excessive soot, or has an inconsistent fragrance throw will generate customer complaints and returns regardless of its price point. For regulated markets (US and EU), non-compliant wicks or fragrance compounds create legal liability beyond the commercial loss. Investing in quality control at the factory level costs a fraction of the cost of a product recall or customer refund program.

Common Defects in Vietnamese Candle Production

  • Tunneling: Candle burns down center, leaving wax ring on container sides — caused by incorrect wick size or first-burn instructions
  • Fragrance inconsistency: Batch-to-batch variation in scent strength — caused by fragrance weighing errors or wax temperature during pour
  • Sinkholes: Depressions in wax surface — caused by improper cooling rate or insufficient second pour
  • Wick off-center: Wick position drifts during pour — affects even burn and causes sooting on one container side
  • Label defects: Bubbling, misalignment, or adhesion failure — particularly common on curved glass jar surfaces
  • Short fill weight: Under-filled containers — affects burn time and is a trade description issue in regulated markets

Inspection Stages for Candle Orders

Pre-production: Approve fragrance sample, wax color sample, wick selection, and container. Confirm fill weight specification in writing. During production (DUPRO): At 30–40% completion, check fragrance consistency, fill weight accuracy, wick placement, and label application. Pre-shipment (PSI): AQL 2.5 sampling for major defects, burn test on random samples, carton drop test, final count vs packing list.
